The public specifications and standards this topic draws on. Every factual claim in the preceding chapters traces to one of these; the worked example's fleet, tasks, times and resources are illustrative teaching values and belong to no source.

Editions matter in this material more than titles do. The S-series specifications are revised on their own schedule and the US standards are historical documents that remain the clearest published statement of the method, so the issue or amendment a claim rests on should be read off the publisher's own record before the claim goes into a deliverable.

The international specifications

  1. ASD/AIA S3000L, International procedure specification for Logistic Support Analysis (the LSA process, the separation of task requirement identification from maintenance task analysis, and the data model behind both). It has passed through several issues since its first and is revised on its own schedule; the current issue and its date are published at s-series.org, where the specification is downloadable.
  2. ASD/AIA S4000P, International specification for developing and continuously improving preventive maintenance (the preventive maintenance analysis that produces the scheduled task requirements S3000L then sends to task analysis; scoped to complex technical products generally rather than to aircraft alone).
  3. ASD/AIA S1000D, International specification for technical publications (the consumer of the validated task sequence).
  4. ASD/AIA S2000M, International specification for material management (provisioning, and the consumer of the spares and consumables a task names).
  5. ASD/AIA S5000F, International specification for in-service data feedback (the route by which observed task times and frequencies come back).

The US lineage

  1. MIL-STD-1388-1A, Logistic Support Analysis, US Department of Defense, 11 April 1983, with later notices (Task 301 Functional Requirements Identification and Task 401 Task Analysis, in Task Section 400. The subtask list under Task 401 is edition-dependent, so a citation to a numbered subtask is only useful with the edition attached).
  2. MIL-STD-1388-2B, DoD Requirements for a Logistic Support Analysis Record, US Department of Defense (the relational LSAR tables. The C-series tables carry the task inventory, the task analysis, the sequential subtask description, personnel, support equipment, manuals and provisioned items, and the standard prescribes how mean man-hours, mean elapsed time and task frequency are derived rather than estimated).
  3. SAE TA-STD-0017, Product Support Analysis (the modern US process standard, and the successor to the 1388-1A task structure).
  4. SAE GEIA-STD-0007, Logistics Product Data (the modern US data standard, and the successor to the LSAR data of 1388-2B by way of MIL-PRF-49506).
